TOKYO, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Japanese telecommunications operator KDDI said Tuesday that an email system it provides to six internet service providers had been hit by unauthorized external access, potentially exposing up to 14.22 million email addresses and passwords. Email content may also have been compromised.

The company said an unknown party may have unlawfully obtained users' login credentials and urged affected users to change their passwords immediately to prevent unauthorized access to their accounts.

KDDI said it detected the breach on June 17 and completed repairs the same day. The full scope of the incident is still under investigation.
