LOS ANGELES, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and one child injured in a shooting at a public library on Monday in Chico, northern California.
Police said they responded shortly after 5 p.m. local time (0000 GMT Tuesday) to a report of gunfire and screams inside the Butte County Library branch. Upon arrival, officers entered the building while the suspect fled through the rear exit. The suspect was later taken into custody by officers positioned behind the library, according to Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public and the suspect is believed to have acted alone. A child was taken to hospital with a minor injury. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their next of kin. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Local officials urged residents to avoid the area as the investigation continues and said all Butte County library branches will remain closed on Tuesday. ■
