JAKARTA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has accelerated the designation of national cultural heritage, with 460 sites and objects granted national status so far this year, according to the Ministry of Culture.
Restu Gunawan, director general of cultural protection and tradition at the ministry, said on Monday the government aims to designate over 1,000 national cultural heritage sites and objects this year.
He said the ministry is pushing for the designation process to be carried out three to four times a year, instead of only once, as more regional governments submit proposals.
Restu said the process still faces technical challenges, including data collection, historical research, and documentation, while the government is also revitalizing several royal palaces to support heritage protection. ■
