COLOMBO, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has begun building protective earthen embankments to prevent accidents involving wild elephants and trains, the Department of Government Information said Tuesday.

The embankments will allow elephants to cross railway tracks more safely and reduce the risk of collisions, the department said.

The pilot project focuses on wild elephants roaming in and around the Flood Plains National Park in north-central Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has recorded frequent elephant deaths caused by train collisions, electrocution, shootings, and other causes linked to human-elephant conflict.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation reported 397 elephant deaths in 2025, with most linked to human-elephant conflict.
