MADRID, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Members of Deportivo voted to change the club's official name ahead of the 2026-27 season, adopting a version that more closely reflects the Galician name of its home city.

The club, formerly known as Real Club Deportivo de La Coruna, will now be officially called Real Club Deportivo de A Coruna after 79.41 percent of voting members backed the proposal.

Turnout was 55.96 percent among those eligible to vote.

"With this decision, RC Deportivo has advanced in the formal adaptation of its name and has completed a participative process with season ticket holders and the full support of shareholders," club president Juan Carlos Escotet said on Tuesday.

Deportivo returned to Spain's top flight at the end of last season after securing automatic promotion by finishing second in the second division behind Racing Santander.

The club ended an eight-year absence from La Liga during which it had dropped as low as the third tier of Spanish football.

Founded in 1906, Deportivo won its only Spanish league title in the 1999-2000 season.

It is not the first time the club has changed its name. It was originally known as Club Deportivo de la Sala Calvet, named after the gymnasium attended by its founding members, before becoming Deportivo de La Coruna by 1909.
