NANJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong has called for building biomedicine into an emerging pillar industry and fostering brain-computer interface technology as a future industry, so as to provide strong support for building a Healthy China.
Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during an inspection tour in east China's Jiangsu Province on Monday and Tuesday this week.
Noting that biomedicine is an important guarantee for improving people's health, Liu called for encouraging the application of artificial intelligence, big data and other technologies in pharmaceutical research and development to empower the high-quality development of the biomedicine sector.
Liu said brain-computer interfaces represent a major frontier technology and a key area of international industrial competition. He urged efforts to deepen interdisciplinary integration, strengthen basic research in brain science, accelerate breakthroughs in key and core technologies, and enhance original innovation capabilities.
As China has fully entered its main flood season and rainstorms have become more frequent, Liu also called for close attention to weather conditions and flood developments, strengthened meteorological monitoring, forecasting and early warning, and solid efforts to protect people's lives and property. ■
