XI'AN, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese second-tier football club Shaanxi Union on Sunday named former China international Chen Tao as its new head coach.

Chen, 41, parted ways with Shenzhen Peng City of the Chinese Super League (CSL) at the end of May and replaced Henk Fraser, who left Shaanxi Union on June 7 for personal reasons.

"Chen Tao has coached both youth and senior teams. We expect him to help Shaanxi Union establish a mature tactical system and help foster local young talents in a bid to write a new chapter for Shaanxi football," Shaanxi Union said in a media release.

Chen also served as assistant coach for Team China in 2023 and 2025, helping the Chinese national team prepare for the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The former striker won the Chinese Football Association Cup, the EAFF E-1 Football Championship and a gold medal at the 2005 East Asian Games in his playing career.

Shaanxi has taken 13 points from its opening 10 matches of the 2026 China League One season, leaving it ninth in the standings and 10 points behind league leader Guangzhou GZ-Power.
