KABUL, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and two others injured due to a highway collision in eastern Afghanistan's Khost province on Sunday, a local police officer has said.

The crash occurred in the Dakhio area of Khost city, along the highway connecting the capital Kabul to eastern provinces, when a truck slammed into a three-wheeled rickshaw, killing four commuters, including a woman and a child on the spot and injuring two children, provincial police spokesperson Tahir Ahrar said on Sunday evening.

The children who survived the impact were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, said Ahrar, adding that the cause of the collision remains unknown and is under investigation.

Road accidents are prevalent across Afghanistan, where a combination of poorly maintained highways, reckless driving, challenging mountainous terrain, vehicle overloading, overtaking, and excessive speed frequently result in fatal crashes.
