NEW YORK, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup after suffering an ankle injury in Saturday's 2-1 win over Cote d'Ivoire.
The Borussia Dortmund central defender sustained the injury in the first half and was replaced by Antonio Rudiger at halftime. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said after the match that the 26-year-old appeared to have suffered ligament damage.
Subsequent tests confirmed a torn ankle ligament, ending Schlotterbeck's tournament, although he will remain with the squad for the time being.
"Schlotti will be greatly missed on the pitch as an outstanding defender, especially for his excellent build-up play. It could have been his World Cup," Nagelsmann said.
"Yesterday, we all tried to lift his spirits. Fortunately, he is a very positive character who is already looking ahead again. It is a very positive sign that he will initially remain here within the team, because he also has an influence off the pitch.
"Despite his absence, we are still very well positioned in central defence," he added. ■
