KABUL, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police have disrupted a firearms smuggling operation in southern Helmand province, seizing 50 pistols and 15,000 rounds of ammunition before the shipment could be transported across the border, provincial authorities announced Sunday evening.

Acting on credible intelligence, police launched a targeted raid in the Rubat area of Bahramcha district, where they intercepted the illicit consignment, according to a statement issued by the provincial Department of Information and Culture.

The weapons and ammunition, which were being illegally smuggled to a neighboring country, were intercepted and seized by police before reaching their intended destination, the statement added.

The statement did not disclose whether any suspects were detained, adding that police will not permit anyone to smuggle, carry, or possess ammunition or military equipment illegally.

This latest interdiction highlights ongoing efforts by Afghan forces to strengthen border security and curb the flow of illicit weapons that pose a threat to regional stability and public safety.
