MOSCOW, June 20 (Xinhua) -- A knife-wielding man attacked shoppers at a mall in southwestern Russia's Krasnodar region, killing a woman and injuring several others, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Volk said Saturday.
"A young man stabbed several visitors inside the shopping mall. According to preliminary information, one woman died," Volk said in a statement.
The suspect also threw a pyrotechnic device into a children's play area, she said. No injuries from the explosion were initially reported, though the fire alarm was triggered.
At least five people were injured in the attack, regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said. He further said the victims were receiving treatment at regional and city hospitals and were in stable condition with injuries of moderate severity.
The attacker has been taken into custody, and prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the incident. ■
