PHNOM PENH, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Supreme Court on Friday gave a three-year suspended prison sentence to Rong Chhun, a senior advisor for the opposition Nation Power Party, for incitement to cause social unrest, according to a verdict.

The verdict also stripped his political rights for five years and banned him from leaving the country during this period.

The 57-year-old opposition politician was found guilty of inciting social unrest by spreading false information regarding the border issue with Vietnam and social crime issues.

The Supreme Court's ruling followed Rong Chhun's appeal of a lower court judgment.

In May 2025, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced him to four years in prison and also permanently stripped his political rights.

The Phnom Penh Appeal Court upheld this conviction in March 2026.
