BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese film "Dear You" premiered in Brunei's capital on Thursday evening, attracting nearly 200 guests from various sectors of society, and received enthusiastic responses from the audience.
Low Soon Lye, a leader of the local Chinese community and organizer of the event, said on Thursday that he hopes the film will help the younger generation learn about history and embrace the spirit of perseverance and diligence demonstrated by their forefathers.
Low, whose ancestors came from the Chaoshan region in south China's Guangdong, said his ancestors crossed the seas from China to Southeast Asia. His family's experience closely resembles the story in the film, which deeply moved him.
"The film has resonated far more strongly than we had expected," he said. "I hope more people will learn about the hardships our forefathers endured when they left their homeland and ventured across the oceans to Southeast Asia." ■
