SINGAPORE, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Singapore has welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran to halt all military operations in the Middle East and establish a framework for further negotiations.
In a statement issued Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore commended the mediation efforts that facilitated the accord, specifically highlighting the roles played by Pakistan and Qatar.
"A resolution of the outstanding issues in accordance with international law will create the necessary conditions for lasting peace, security, and stability in the region," the ministry said.
The city-state also welcomed the commitment to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical international global shipping lane for maritime trade.
"We urge all parties to uphold their obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and customary international law with respect to safe and unimpeded transit passage in the Strait of Hormuz, and to protect the safety and wellbeing of seafarers and ships in the region," said the ministry. ■
