SEATTLE, United States, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Australia head coach Tony Popovic believes his side must raise its level again if it is to overcome host United States in a pivotal FIFA World Cup Group D clash on Friday.
Popovic praised his team's disciplined display in a 2-0 victory over Türkiye but warned that replicating that performance alone may not be enough against a U.S. side buoyed by home support and fresh from a convincing opening-round win.
"We'll need to be better," Popovic said at a press conference held at Seattle Stadium on the eve of the match. "The challenge in front of us is different, and we understand the quality the United States possesses."
Australia enters the contest level with the United States on three points after both teams won their opening group matches. With a place in the knockout stage potentially within reach, the meeting in Seattle could prove decisive in shaping the group's final standings.
The Socceroos impressed in their tournament opener, absorbing pressure before striking effectively on the counterattack. However, Popovic expects a different tactical battle against a U.S. team that demonstrated attacking depth and intensity in a 4-1 victory over Paraguay.
"They have a lot of energy, a lot of pace and they'll be playing in front of their own supporters," Popovic said. "We know the atmosphere will be special, but that's part of why we're here."
Much of the pre-match discussion has centered on the fitness of U.S. captain Christian Pulisic, who remains a doubt because of a calf injury. Popovic insisted that Australia's preparation would not change regardless of whether the American star is included in the starting lineup.
"They have quality throughout the squad," he said. "We're preparing for the United States, not just one player."
