KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's inflation accelerated in May to its fastest pace in nearly two years, driven by a quicker rise in food prices, official data showed on Friday.
Consumer prices rose 2 percent year-on-year in May, with the consumer price index (CPI) increasing to 137.1 from 134.4 a year earlier, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement.
The food and beverages group, which accounts for 29.8 percent of the CPI basket, rose 1.4 percent during the month.
On a month-on-month basis, headline inflation edged up 0.1 percent, easing from a 0.4-percent increase in April. ■
