JAKARTA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's geological agency has identified several areas at risk of liquefaction in Central Sulawesi following Tuesday's earthquake, urging local authorities to take geological hazards into account in reconstruction planning.

The agency's head, Lana Saria, said on Friday that parts of Sigi Regency, Parigi Moutong Regency, and Poso Regency faced elevated liquefaction risks due to water-saturated sandy soils that could lose stability during strong shaking.

Liquefaction occurs when strong shaking causes saturated soil to lose strength, potentially leading to ground collapse and severe structural damage.

The earthquake killed at least three people, displaced thousands, and triggered hundreds of aftershocks in Central Sulawesi, according to disaster authorities.
