COLOMBO, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran, said a statement from Sri Lanka's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism on Friday.
This MoU represents a significant step toward de-escalation and long-term regional and global stability, including through the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and providing for a framework for the continuity of negotiations, read the statement.
Sri Lanka strongly supports the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy and remains optimistic that this step will foster sustainable peace across the region.
Sri Lanka extends its sincere appreciation to Pakistan and Qatar for their pivotal roles as mediators, and to all partners whose support was instrumental in reaching this successful diplomatic outcome, the statement added. ■
