TOKYO, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The number of people who got stranded on mountains in Japan rose 226 from the previous year to a record of 3,623 in 2025, police data showed Thursday.
The overall number, including 246 foreign visitors, was the highest since the statistics began in 1961, while the number of accidents hit the second-highest level of 3,122, up 176, the National Police Agency data showed.
Of the climbers stranded, 332 died or remained missing, up 32, and 1,480 were injured, up 90.
The number of foreign visitors needing help rose by 111 from the previous year, the highest since records on foreign tourist incidents began being tracked in 2018.
By prefecture, Nagano in central Japan had the largest number of cases of people stranded at 358, followed by Hokkaido at 199 and Yamanashi at 192. ■
