KABUL, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed after a cargo truck veered off a road and plunged into a river in Afghanistan's northeastern Badakhshan province, a local official said on Thursday.
The accident occurred in Kuf Ab district when the truck reportedly lost control, left the roadway and overturned into a river, according to Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesperson for the provincial police command.
The bodies of the victims remain trapped inside the submerged vehicle. Rescue efforts are continuing, but the operation has been complicated by difficult terrain, poor road conditions and a lack of necessary equipment, Kamgar said.
Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, where many roads, particularly in remote mountainous provinces, are in poor condition. Reckless driving, overloaded vehicles and inadequate transport infrastructure are often cited as major causes of road mishaps across the country. ■
