NEW YORK, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Harry Kane scored twice as England opened its World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia on Wednesday, matching a national record for goals scored at the tournament.
Kane's retaken first-half penalty and his powerful header from a Declan Rice corner took his tally to 10 World Cup goals, equaling the mark set by Gary Lineker.
Lineker scored his 10 goals across the 1986 and 1990 World Cups in Mexico and Italy, while Kane reached the milestone in his third tournament appearance.
The Bayern Munich striker scored six goals as England reached the semifinals in Russia in 2018 and added four more in Qatar four years later, although he may still rue the penalty he missed in England's 2-1 quarterfinal defeat to France.
England will next face Ghana on Tuesday, with the Black Stars having secured a 1-0 victory over Panama with an injury-time winner. ■
