BERLIN, June 17 (Xinhua) -- RB Leipzig has dismissed coach Ole Werner after one season, despite steering the club back into the UEFA Champions League.
Assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann have also been relieved of their duties, with sporting director Marcel Schaefer informing the coaching staff after Leipzig completed its review.
"We have once again analyzed the past season intensively and conclusively over the past few days. On Tuesday evening we then made the decision to fill the head coach position anew," Schaefer said on Wednesday.
"We thank Ole, Tom and Patrick for their work and commitment at RB Leipzig. They played a major part in the successful rebuild and in qualifying for the Champions League."
Werner, 38, arrived in Leipzig on July 1, 2025, after three and a half years at Werder Bremen. He was hired after Leipzig endured a disappointing season, finishing seventh and missing out on Europe.
Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
The club said it would provide information soon on Werner's successor, with former Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis reportedly a leading candidate. ■
