SAN FRANCISCO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Austria earned its first FIFA World Cup win in 36 years after beating debutant Jordan 3-1 in Group J on Tuesday.

Austria is appearing at its first World Cup finals since 1998, while Jordan qualified for the tournament for the first time.

Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead in the 20th minute. Ali Olwan equalized in the 50th minute, scoring Jordan's first World Cup goal, but Yazan Alarab's own goal put Austria back in front in the 76th minute. Marko Arnautovic converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal the victory.

Austria broke the deadlock with its first real chance, as Xaver Schlager laid the ball back for Schmid, who curled it into the top corner.

Five minutes after the interval, Olwan dribbled down the left flank before sending a powerful strike in off the right post.

Marcel Sabitzer then delivered a corner into the box, causing chaos in Jordan's defense as Alarab headed the ball into his own net.

In stoppage time, Arnautovic's shot was handled by Salim Obaid, and the referee awarded Austria a penalty after a VAR review before Arnautovic stepped up to convert.

Austria will next take on Argentina, while Jordan faces Algeria.
