HANOI, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam remains committed to achieving its economic growth target of 10 percent this year despite global challenges, the Vietnam News Agency reported Wednesday.

The Ministry of Finance said at its regular press conference on the day that economic growth in the first five months of the year reached about 1.83 percent, a positive result amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, oil price volatility and global inflationary pressure, but still below the planned trajectory, the report said.

The ministry is working with competent agencies to review growth scenarios to devise appropriate policy measures, supporting localities and businesses in meeting their assigned growth target.

Vietnam's total trade turnover rose 25 percent year on year to 445.1 billion U.S. dollars in the January-May period, while its trade deficit stood at 13.8 billion U.S. dollars during the span and widened to 15.36 billion U.S. dollars as of June 7, according to the ministry's data.
