ISLAMABAD, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan recorded a current account surplus of 459 million U.S. dollars in May, reversing a deficit of 276 million dollars in April, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday.

The country had posted a current account deficit of 44 million dollars in May 2025, the central bank said.

The turnaround was mainly driven by a sharp increase in workers' remittances and a slight rise in exports during the month.

During the first 11 months of fiscal year 2025-26, Pakistan recorded a cumulative current account surplus of 255 million dollars, compared with a surplus of 1.62 billion dollars in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The SBP data also showed that Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves, excluding cash reserve requirement and special cash reserve requirement holdings, rose to 17.27 billion dollars, up 49 percent year-on-year compared to 11.62 billion dollars, indicating stronger external buffers despite continued structural pressures on the external account.
