BUDAPEST, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Hungary's parliament on Monday approved the 16th amendment to the country's Fundamental Law, introducing an eight-year limit for the office of prime minister and barring any individual from serving more than eight years in the post, whether consecutively or non-consecutively.

Under the amendment, a person who has already served a total of eight years as Hungary's prime minister can no longer be elected to the post. The new provision applies to former, current and future prime ministers since May 2, 1990, following Hungary's democratic transition.

As a result, former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who served a total of 20 years in office, will be no longer eligible to return to the post. Incumbent Prime Minister Peter Magyar will also be limited to a maximum of eight years in office.

The amendment, which stipulates that a prime minister's mandate automatically terminates once the cumulative eight-year limit is reached, will enter into force on the day following its promulgation.
