KABUL, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's capital has introduced its first official online taxi service, marking a significant step in the modernization of the urban transportation sector, the country's Ministry of Transport and Aviation announced late Sunday.
The ministry has issued an operating license to a firm now operating under the brand "Afghan Taxi Online," which provides on-demand rides via a dedicated mobile application across the capital, Kabul. The initiative marks a rare but significant step toward digitizing urban mobility in a nation where modern public infrastructure remains severely limited, according to the ministry's statement.
The launch is seen as an important milestone for Kabul, a bustling city of nearly seven million people that continues to struggle with inadequate and inconsistent public services.
