TOKYO, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks rose Monday, with the Nikkei stock index closing above 69,000 for the first time, as investors reacted to the news of the long-awaited peace deal between the United States and Iran.
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended up 3,297.46 points, or 4.99 percent, from Friday at 69,317.50, after briefly surging over 5 percent.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 117.64 points, or 3.03 percent, higher at 3,999.60, also a record closing high.
On the stock market, investors rushed to buy a wide range of stocks from the outset after U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post that a deal had been reached to end the U.S.-Iran conflict, which Iran later acknowledged.
Meanwhile, gains were trimmed in the afternoon as some investors locked in gains and stayed on the sidelines ahead of the outcome of the Bank of Japan's policy meeting on Tuesday, analysts said. ■
