KABUL, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health on Monday announced that it had collected 227,000 units of blood over the past year, with 210,000 units successfully transfused to patients, marking a significant achievement in the country's healthcare system.
Wahdat Alokozay, director general of curative medicine at the ministry, highlighted the figures during a ceremony commemorating World Blood Donor Day. He described voluntary blood donation as a vital humanitarian act that saves lives and strengthens national health infrastructure.
World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14 and promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to thank voluntary donors and raise awareness about the critical importance of safe, regular blood donation.
Health officials noted that consistent voluntary donations have played a key role in meeting the transfusion demands of hospitals and medical facilities across the country, contributing to improved emergency and routine medical care. ■
