NEW DELHI, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Wholesale inflation rose to 9.68 percent in India in May, compared to 8.26 percent during April, according to the official data released by the federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Monday.

The rise in wholesale inflation was attributed to a sharp spike in crude petroleum, fuel, and manufactured items' prices. The rise in fuel prices has led to an increase in transport charges.

Increasing the Base Year 2022-23 from 2011-12 for calculating the monthly Wholesale Price Index (WPI), the federal ministry increased the total number of items from 697 to 957.

Three days ago, the federal government revealed that retail inflation had risen to 3.93 percent in May in the country, from 3.48 percent in April.
