ISLAMABAD, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A fresh case of monkeypox has been confirmed in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi of Sindh province, the provincial health department said on Saturday.

According to the health department officials, a 40-year-old man tested positive for the virus via a PCR test and is being treated and monitored at a local hospital in the city.

The officials said that the patient had no recent travel history, raising concerns about the possibility of local transmission of the disease.

The latest case has increased the number of reported monkeypox infections in Karachi to 10, and 35 in Sindh province this year, prompting authorities to strengthen surveillance and preventive measures to curb further spread of the virus.

At least nine deaths have been reported in the province this year.

Authorities said contact tracing and monitoring efforts are underway as part of measures to contain the disease and prevent further infections.
