KABUL, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Five people died and three others were injured when two vehicles collided at high speed in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province late Friday, local authorities said on Saturday.
The crash occurred on the outskirts of Imam Sahib district when a vehicle carrying young people slammed into an oncoming car due to reckless driving, according to Jumadin Khaksar, spokesman for the provincial police. All five fatalities were young people who died at the scene.
The injured were transferred to a nearby medical facility for treatment, said Khaksar, adding that an investigation into the cause of the accident was underway.
Traffic accidents remain a major cause of death and injury in Afghanistan, claiming hundreds of lives annually. Authorities cite driver negligence, poor road infrastructure, aging vehicles, and insufficient traffic signage as key contributing factors, issues often exacerbated during peak travel and tourism periods. ■
