ADEN, Yemen, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire outside the residence of Abdul-Rahman Sheikh, governor of Yemen's southern port city of Aden, local authorities said on Friday.

The attack occurred on Thursday evening when the armed assailant opened fire on security guards outside the residence, according to a statement by Aden's authorities. Security forces immediately launched a pursuit operation and killed the shooter.

The statement said a soldier and a Syrian couple were killed in the shooting, while several others sustained injuries. The couple, a doctor and a nurse, were passing through the area when they were caught in the gunfire, local media reported.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.

Aden has served as the seat of Yemen's internationally recognized government since the escalation of the country's conflict in 2015 and remains a key political and economic center in southern Yemen.

Despite intensified efforts by authorities to improve stability, the city continues to face periodic security incidents linked to the country's prolonged turmoil.
