TOKYO, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed on Thursday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index briefly plunging more than 2 percent before clawing back into positive territory.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 38.00 points, or 0.06 percent, from Wednesday at 64,217.27.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 17.25 points, or 0.45 percent, lower at 3,830.35.
The Nikkei came under early pressure, shedding more than 2 percent in the opening session after Wall Street fell overnight on renewed Middle East tensions and elevated inflation data. Buying in heavyweight technology shares later lifted the index back into the green.
However, as rising crude oil prices and caution over potential interest rate hikes amid the Middle East conflict dampened market sentiment, a wide range of stocks finished lower, analysts said. ■
