DHAKA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi government has unveiled a record 9.38 trillion taka (nearly 77 billion U.S. dollars) in the proposed national budget, targeting economic growth of 6.5 percent for the next 2026-27 fiscal year starting in July.
The country's Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday placed before the parliament the first annual budget of the government of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The total size of the expenditure budget is 13.7 percent of the South Asian country's GDP, according to the minister.
On the expenditure side, he said, the size of the Annual Development Program for the next fiscal year will be 3.16 trillion taka, with human resource development and education, health, science, research, and technology sectors getting the biggest chunk of money.
According to the proposal, the overall budget deficit will be 2.43 trillion taka, which is 3.6 percent of GDP.
The minister said the government aims to reduce inflation to 7.5 percent and raise GDP growth to 6.5 percent in the upcoming fiscal year. ■
