COLOMBO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Tuesday commenced a national audit on accessibility and sanitation facilities in government institutions providing services to persons with disabilities, the Department of Government Information (DGI) said.

The 2026 budget proposals allocated a billion rupees (about 2.96 million U.S. dollars) to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities at public institutions, including railway stations, bus stands, courts and police stations, the DGI said.

The National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities will oversee the national audit.

While Sri Lanka has laws mandating barrier-free environments for persons with disabilities, physical access to government institutions remains inconsistent. The government has pledged to address these inequalities.
