JERUSALEM, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military said it intercepted a rocket fired by Hezbollah at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon on Tuesday night.

Air-raid sirens were activated in northern Israel in communities near the Lebanese border, prompting residents to seek shelter.

The launch came amid recent escalation, following Israeli strikes on a residential neighborhood in Tyre on Tuesday that killed at least eight people and injured 35 others, including six women and three children, according to Lebanon's National News Agency.

Israel's security cabinet has reportedly approved a new policy under which any cross-border fire by Hezbollah would be met with an Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburb.

Israel and Lebanon agreed last week to implement a ceasefire, according to a joint statement released after trilateral negotiations in Washington. The ceasefire is contingent on a complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector, said the statement.
