COLOMBO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Cabinet has approved a proposal to draft a digital economy bill to accelerate digital transformation and support the growth of the country's digital economy.

The cabinet approved on Tuesday the proposal submitted by the president in his capacity as the minister of digital economy to instruct the Legal Draftsman's Department to prepare the bill.

The proposed legislation will provide for a new institutional framework with legal powers to implement the national digital policy and guidelines effectively.

Accordingly, the planned framework is expected to cover policymaking, technology implementation, regulation and enforcement. It is also intended to help attract skilled professionals needed for the digital economy.

The government has identified continued private sector participation as an important part of Sri Lanka's digital development efforts. The proposed law will also focus on emerging areas of digital innovation, including artificial intelligence and related activities.

A concept paper has already been prepared for the establishment of the new framework.
