VIENTIANE, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Lao authorities convened a meeting to discuss efforts to improve sustainable urban development in the ancient town of Luang Prabang.
A meeting on the Urban Environment Improvement Project in Luang Prabang was held on Tuesday, according to the local Pasaxon newspaper on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, Chindavong Phosikham, vice chairman of the Luang Prabang Provincial Administrative Committee, highlighted Luang Prabang's significance as a World Heritage city renowned for its rich history, unique cultural traditions, and natural beauty. He noted that the province is facing growing challenges, including rapid urban expansion, waste management, wastewater treatment, environmental protection, and increasing pressure from both domestic and international tourism.
He emphasized that the Urban Environment Improvement Project will play a vital role in enhancing public health, improving environmental quality, reducing pollution and disaster risks, and supporting sustainable urban development.
Participants reviewed progress on project implementation, discussed key challenges and opportunities, and explored solutions related to solid waste management, wastewater treatment, the organization of electricity and telecommunications infrastructure, road improvements, and other urban development priorities. ■
