From telecommunications, electric vehicles to artificial intelligence, an increasing number of Chinese companies have found themselves branded as threats to U.S. national security. What was once a narrowly defined concept has steadily expanded, becoming a convenient pretext for imposing restrictions on foreign competitors.
National security concerns deserve to be taken seriously. But when the term is stretched to cover almost any area where competition exists, it risks losing credibility. Turning trade and technology disputes into security issues not only undermines fair competition but also adds uncertainty to global markets and supply chains. The world needs clear rules -- not a catch-all excuse.
