Top political advisor stresses social stability, modernization in NW China's Xinjiang

URUMQI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Wang Huning, China's top political advisor, has emphasized the need to safeguard social stability and advance modernization in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks during his investigation and research tour in Xinjiang from Friday to Tuesday.

Stressing that safeguarding social stability should remain the top priority, Wang called for actions to strengthen and innovate social governance and advance law-based and regular counterterrorist efforts.

He also noted the importance of fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation as the central task and urged efforts to effectively implement the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law and bolster law-based management of religious affairs.

Regarding economic development, Wang called for developing new quality productive forces in line with local conditions and building a modern industrial system featuring Xinjiang's unique strengths.

Efforts should be stepped up to promote development in southern Xinjiang, consolidate and expand poverty alleviation achievements, and create more jobs through multiple channels, he added.
