PHNOM PENH, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth on Monday urged citizens to transition to electric vehicles (EVs) to curb emissions, improve air quality, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
"Electric vehicles represent not only a technological innovation but also an environmental solution," Sophalleth said, while witnessing the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Environment and One Road Company to promote the use of EVs in Cambodia.
Cambodia has made ambitious commitments under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 55 percent by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the minister said, noting that the government alone cannot achieve these goals as success requires the active participation of the private sector, development partners, civil society, academic institutions, communities, and every citizen.
The minister called upon businesses to invest in clean technologies, industries to embrace sustainable production, communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices, and citizens to support the transition toward a low-carbon future.
According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Cambodia registered a total of 11,656 electric cars between 2021 and March 2026. During the same period, the country also recorded 3,832 electric motorcycles and 722 electric three-wheelers. ■
