CAIRO, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Egypt on Monday stressed the need for a swift agreement between the United States and Iran to help spare the Middle East from the risks of further escalation.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said an agreement should address the concerns of all parties, particularly regional countries, and contribute to restoring stability by resolving outstanding issues, including Iran's nuclear program and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Cairo called on all sides to respect international law and the United Nations Charter, refrain from the use of force, and prioritize political and diplomatic solutions.
Egypt said reducing tensions could help create conditions for addressing broader regional crises, including the Palestinian issue, which it described as the core conflict in the region.
Separately, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed regional developments and efforts to de-escalate tensions in a phone call with his French counterpart.
Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo's support for the U.S.-Iran negotiating track and highlighted Egypt's efforts to contain tensions and promote diplomatic solutions.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the situations in Gaza and Lebanon.
Israel and Iran traded strikes on Monday in the most serious confrontation since a ceasefire began in April. ■
