WARSAW, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China fell 21-11 to Australia in the women's play-in round of the FIBA 3x3 Basketball World Cup on Friday, missing out on a place in the quarterfinals.
After a tight opening, Australia took control with a scoring run and strong defense, and then extended its lead through free throws. China was unable to recover afterwards.
Australia will face Ukraine in the quarterfinals. Teams progressing from the play-in stage included Hungary, Australia, Azerbaijan and France in the women's bracket, and Austria, the Netherlands, Latvia and France on the men's side.
The quarterfinals will be held on Saturday, followed by the semifinals and final on Sunday.
Twenty men's and 20 women's teams are competing in the World Cup, with teams split into four pools of five. After a round-robin pool phase running from June 1-4, the top finisher of each group directly progressed into the quarterfinals while second and third-placed sides entered a play-in round for the remaining four spots. ■
