ASUNCION, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Paraguay captain Gustavo Gomez has vowed his team will spare no effort in its return to the FIFA World Cup after a 16-year absence.
Gomez said the Albirroja was in a confident frame of mind after a 4-0 win over Nicaragua in the South American side's last warmup match ahead of the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
"In football it's a little difficult to promise results, but what we can promise is that in every practice, every training session and every match, we will give our lives for these colors," Gomez told fans at the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asuncion.
"We have high hopes and I can assure you that we've been preparing the best we can for this."
Paraguay will begin its World Cup campaign against the United States on June 12 before facing Türkiye and Australia in Group D.
The Albirroja's last World Cup finals appearance was in 2010 in South Africa, where it reached the quarterfinals for the first time. ■
