MOSCOW, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Russia on Wednesday voiced concern over the latest exchange of strikes between the United States and Iran in the Persian Gulf, warning that the development could lead to a new, dangerous escalation of the military and political situation in the region.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on all parties to refrain from steps that could further escalate tensions and disrupt diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.
Russia considers attacks on civilian infrastructure unacceptable and supports the Arab states of the Persian Gulf in defending their sovereignty and territorial integrity, Zakharova said.
She added that Russia hopes the ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations will help achieve long-term stability in the Middle East.
The spokeswoman said that regional disputes should be resolved through political and diplomatic means in accordance with international law, and Russia remains ready to contribute to the process. ■
