PHNOM PENH, June 2 (Xinhua) -- A forum on combating fake news in Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) countries opened here on Tuesday, aiming at strengthening regional media cooperation, officials said.

The half-day forum brought together approximately 200 participants, including government representatives, media professionals, experts, civil society representatives, digital platform actors, youth, influencers, and participants from LMC countries.

Speaking at the forum, Cambodian Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra said fake news, misinformation, disinformation, manipulated content, and harmful online narratives could now spread across borders within minutes.

The minister urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the information they produce, share, and consume is accurate, responsible, and beneficial to society.

"At the regional level, the LMC framework can play a stronger role in combating fake news from all angles," he said. "The LMC is not only a platform for development cooperation. It can also serve as a practical platform for building information trust, digital resilience, and responsible communication among our countries."

Pheaktra expressed his sincere appreciation and thanks to China for its generous support through the LMC Special Fund, saying that the support has contributed to strengthening cooperation among LMC countries in the fields of information, media, public communication, and digital resilience.
