KABUL, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Work for the construction of three water supply networks has been completed in Shirzad district of Nangarhar province in east Afghanistan and the networks were put into operation, reported the official Bakhtar News Agency on Tuesday.

Constructed at a cost of 17 million afghani (around 268,000 U.S. dollars), the project will provide clean water to 850 families, the state-run media outlet further said.

The government would spare no effort to provide potable water to the citizens elsewhere in the post-war nation, Bakhtar further added.

Previously, the government put into operation eight water supply networks in the northern Takhar province in mid-May.

Afghanistan has been facing a water shortage even in the capital city Kabul, due to frequent droughts over the past several years. However, the government, by launching small-scale, medium and large projects, has been trying to manage water resources and overcome water scarcity in the post-war nation.
