BERLIN, June 2 (Xinhua) -- German defense giant Rheinmetall announced on Tuesday that it has secured a 5.7-billion-euro (6.6 billion U.S. dollars) contract to supply Romania with combat vehicles, air defense systems and naval vessels.
The defense package, awarded by the Romanian authorities on May 29 under the European Union's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program, is the largest international contract in Rheinmetall's recent history, the company said in a statement.
Under the agreement, Rheinmetall will supply Romania with 298 Lynx combat vehicles, Skyranger air defense systems, medium-caliber ammunition, two offshore patrol vessels, and two diver support vessels.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028 and be completed by 2030.
According to the press release, over 50 percent of the production will take place in Romania or in collaboration with local companies. ■
