VIENTIANE, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Laos is accelerating its transition to digital government services with the launch of the Smart Customs system and the E-Tax Invoice platform, aimed at modernizing public administration, strengthening revenue collection, and supporting the country's growing digital economy.

The Lao Ministry of Finance on Monday launched the centralized modern customs system, known as Smart Customs, marking a major step in the digital transformation of customs administration in Laos. The system aligns with the National Digital Economy Development Strategy 2021-2030 and the government's revenue modernization plan for 2026-2030.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Santiphab Phomvihane, highlighted the government's commitment to using digital technology to strengthen state revenue management and improve public services.

The Smart Customs platform integrates multiple customs-related functions into a single digital framework. The system is expected to reduce customs clearance times, minimize paperwork, improve inspection efficiency, and enhance transparency in customs operations.

The Ministry of Finance officially launched the E-Tax Invoice system on May 29. The digital invoicing platform is designed to modernize tax administration and support more efficient and transparent revenue collection.

Together, the Smart Customs and E-Tax Invoice initiatives reflect Laos' broader push towards e-government services and a digital economy, aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening governance, facilitating trade, and creating a more business-friendly environment.
